A contestant is murdered during the "Toronto's Smartest Man" battle of the wits, leading Murdoch to join the contest to see if he can puzzle out who the killer might be.

Constable Roberts investigates the death of an old friend in his hometown, defying local police who rule it accidental. Murdoch's son Harry moves in, but it's a tight fit in his rooming house.

Murdoch pursues Terrence Meyers who is suspected of murdering two men and committing treason. Watts tracks down a man's neighbour who vanished while making a chocolate treat.
